How that was worked out
- Starting band for age 7: £3.00 – £4.00, set below the widely quoted UK averages because those span ages 7 to 18 and are pulled up by teenagers.
- For comparison: local authorities publish official rates for children in care, at around £4 to £5.20 a week for ages 5 to 10 - a UK benchmark with nothing to sell.
Consistency matters more than the amount. £3 that arrives every Saturday teaches more than £6 that arrives when somebody remembers.
Where these figures come from
The widely quoted UK averages come from pocket money card providers - GoHenry reported £9.90 a week in 2026, NatWest Rooster Money publishes an annual index. Both are real data covering ages 7 to 18, which makes them misleading for a primary-age child: the average is pulled upwards by teenagers, and the sample is families who already pay for a children's debit card.
The bands here sit below those averages on purpose, and are sense-checked against local authority rates for children in care - published per age, reviewed regularly, and set by a body with nothing to sell.
